London luxury hotel Claridges has unveiled plans to create a five-floor ‘ice berg’ basement beneath the Art Deco portion of the grade II listed Mayfair building. Engineers completed a design for a new five-storey basement underneath London’s Claridge’s, with no interruption to the hotel overhead. This extraordinary achievement was made possible by a combination of traditional mining techniques and state-of-the-art structural and geotechnical engineering by McGee Group and Arup. It is believed to be a world first for concurrent underground development and occupancy on such a scale.
FIS were pleased to be part of the design team that was responsible for waterproofing the lift shafts and connecting tunnels using Maxiprufe Plus and Hydroseal FX to achieve a high performance specification that dealt with the risks present on a project of such scale.
