Huxley House, 87 Avenue Road

This project involved the demolition of an existing 1970’s house and the creation of  Huxley House, an impressive masterpiece designed by Adam Architecture, the foremost exponent of classical architecture in Europe today.

It’s impressive façade, complete with robust Doric columns, draws its inspiration from the Neoclassical architecture that is a distinct hallmark of nearby Marylebone, Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park. With their classical columns and decorative friezes the imposing white stucco houses that abound in these areas reveal the fingerprint of one of Britain’s finest architects, John Nash (1752 – 1835). Responsible for some of London’s most iconic architecture, including Regent Street and Buckingham Palace, Nash’s stylistic influence on Huxley House is instantly evident from its grand scale and striking exterior.

Supporting this impressive piece of architecture, is a two-storey basement which fills the entire footprint of the site, stretching beneath the front drive and the rear garden.  The exclusive nature of this project meant that three lines of defence against water ingress was required, so as to ensure a grade 3 environment, in accordance with BS 8102:2009 is maintained at all costs.

FIS were able to assist Wates Construction Ltd and Modebest Builders Ltd with the provision of a comprehensive waterproofing design. The design incorporated Maxiprufe 2000, bentonite membrane applied to the contiguous piles and beneath the basement slab, Hydrocrete Watertight Concrete slab and liner walls and Hydroflow HP cavity drain system installed internally. FIS were able to develop bespoke waterproofing details for difficult junctions and interfaces to ensure complete continuity throughout the three lines of defence.
